Why does the job exist?
. Patrol the park to ensure public safety and enforce applicable state, local, and federal laws.
. Provide customer service by responding to visitor needs and emergencies, such as perform rescue operations, issue citations, make arrests, take statements, conduct investigations, complete
reports, and attend court.
. Maintain a high level of proficiency with defensive equipment and maintain a high level of mental readiness.
. May conduct investigations, make arrests, serve warrants, issue citations, respond to homicide calls, unattended death calls, suicide calls, public disturbance calls, aggravated assault calls,
DUI/BUI calls, domestic violence calls, burglary/theft calls, water rescue calls, search and rescue calls, missing person calls, property damage calls and make routine traffic stops.
. Collect and verify revenues due to the state.
. Write in a clear and concise manner.
. Complete daily, weekly, and monthly logs and reports.
. May request quotes and assist in the procurement process for projects.
. May assist in coordinating interpretive programs for park visitors.
. May oversee and provide direction to seasonal/temporary staff and volunteers.
. Request and attend law enforcement training to meet requirements of a commissioned officer.
. Operate various office equipment, power tools, vessels, and heavy equipment.
How does it get done?
Perform maintenance and janitorial duties on grounds, roads, trails, park facilities, and vehicle fleet. Provide public safety and customer service by responding to visitor needs and emergencies, such as perform rescue operations, issue citations, make arrests, take statements, conduct investigations, complete reports, and attend court. Complete daily, weekly and monthly logs and reports. Request and attend law enforcement training to meet requirements of a commissioned officer. Operate various office equipment, power tools, vessels, and heavy equipment.
Who are the customers?
Internal and external customers, visitors throughout the state of New Mexico and surrounding states who are campers, hikers, and boaters that come to visit the park for a variety of reasons. Local community businesses in surrounding areas of the park.
Ideal Candidate
Bachelor's Degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Criminal Justice or Wildlife Management.
Two (2) years of experience in parks and recreation management, natural resources, biology, environmental sciences, forestry, criminal justice and/or wildlife management.
One ( 1) year of experience in vessel operations and public speaking.
Minimum Qualification
Minimum Qualifications Associate degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Criminal Justice or Wildlife Management from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of experience in parks and recreation management, natural resources, biology, environmental sciences, forestry, criminal justice and/or wildlife management. Must be a certified NM peace officer. Substitutions apply.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Working Conditions
This position is a Law Enforcement position and requires the incumbent to be in optimum physical condition. This position works outdoors 70% of the time and is exposed to machinery, adverse weather conditions, and some travel. This position is also administrative. Physical requirements include: sitting, walking, standing, bending, twisting, squatting, kneeling, reaching, repeated hand/arm/finger motion, climbing, driving, typing, manual and finger dexterity, lifting up to 75 pounds, pushing or pulling up to 90 pounds, carrying up to 75 pounds. The use of various hand and power tools is required on occasion. Requires working inside and outside, occasionally in adverse weather conditions, extreme cold or heat, for extended periods of time. Due to the nature of park work, there is a risk of injury, animal or insect bites, and exposure to infection, dust, allergens, chemicals and petroleum product. Shift work is required on weekends, holidays and during events held at the park or at another site. Emergency situations may arise requiring extended hours of work, or return to work after normal hours. Sitting at a desk or computer workstation is essential. Must be willing to accept assignment/transfer to another geographic location.
